In broad daylight on 30 October, 15 Hindu temples and over a hundred homes of Hindu families were attacked, ransacked and damaged in Nasirnagar, Brahmanbaria. Amid nationwide protests and condemnation, further attacks took place in different places around the country. In fact, on Thursday some Hindu families in Nasirnagar again came under attack. Their houses were set afire in the darkness of the night.
Further attacks took place in Naogaon, Thakurgaon and Netrakona. Idols religious books and temples were destroyed.
It is downright failure of the local administration that the second round of attacks took place in Nasirnagar, despite the law enforcement agencies supposedly being on alert. Three local leaders of Awami League have been suspended from the organisation and 33 persons have been detained. But fear prevails among the victims. Until the criminals are tried and punished, their apprehensions will not fade.
Those who attacked the Hindu temples and homes included religious bigots as well as miscreants aiming to grab land and property of the minorities. Local politics and politico-religious equations also played a role in the incidents. There were both differences and similarities between the incidents, but all hurt the sentiment of the Hindu community and made them feel all the more insecure. It is most objectionable and unacceptable that the narrow communal comments of the local member of parliament and minister Sayedul Huq, as well as the incidents themselves, should be downplayed.
Every communal attack damages social harmony. These are serious criminal offences. If the criminals are not punished and justice is not ensured due to the religious connotations of these crimes, then communal integration may be harmed. The perpetrators of each and every attack must be tried and punished. It must be ensured that no a single communal attack takes place ever again.
